This project came into existence out of a multifaceted research into my own research. The first part consists of the ‘Straatmandarijn’, a Surinamese concept my mom brought up to always refer to my nani, my grandmother. It would refer to someone strolling all day on the streets, preferably along markets. These conversations with my mom gave me direct insight into a lineage in character between me, my mom, and my grandmother.

I laid out fruits and spices from the market in the space and laid out handmade diya’s, candles, amongst them.

I had crafted an outfit consisting of simple pants and a long dupatta, scarf, which was wrapped around a massive clay ball. I would walk around the fruit 108 times while chanting a mantra for the opening of the throat chakra. There’s a huge part of me that wishes to bravely use my voice like my mother and grandmother did.
